Ever think about what it’s like when you’re watching (or reading about) footage of people getting blown up by evil dudes with machine guns, then they show a dog running through the street that gets stuck in the cross-fire, and you suddenly feel immense sympathy for the dog?  It’s because animals are cute, you can’t really blame them for fucking anything up, and they need our love and attention

I’d imagine that Sarah Palin’s interview with Katie Couric last night is how a lengthy surprise-interview with a not so well-rehearsed Miss Teen USA would go.

Sometimes I feel uber-conservative about my food preferences let alone my experimentation with it.  Certainly I grew up a meat and potatoes kind of girl (in the backwoods of Western New York), but we rarely had such American commodities as bacon or cheeseburgers.

A while back, a friend and I were debating the flavor-merits of bacon.  She claimed bacon could make anything taste better.  She also claimed that if there was a way to make a pouch out of bacon to fill with peas, then she would eat peas.  Maybe that’s counter-intuitive for why would eat peas in the first place, but maybe the girl’s got a point!

Yesterday I saw Maggie Gyllenhaal AND Matt Maala (note, man in photo is not Matt Maala)!

I always feel really nervous when I see celebrities in New York, let alone in Brooklyn.  My initial thought is “OMG OMG that’s ______ ________!”  then my eyes get big, then I think “what would I even begin to say to her if I opened my mouth?”  I’ve told myself before that if I ever met Michael Showalter, I would tell him about my friend’s band Dickfish based on the old Stella skits, but even then, I think he might consider me an obnoxious opportunist that just wanted to tell her friends she talked to Michael Showalter.  Partially true, but I think he deserves to know his legacy.

Scott Tomford, Matt Maala and I were all standing in front of the dry cleaner’s next to Bittersweet on Dekalb.  Scott and Matt were deep in conversation about braces or gym class when I noticed a tall dark haired woman that emanated “I’ve been in movies before” walking towards us with a stroller.  I looked at her face, she looked me in the eye, and I stood there like a creep holding my coffee mug and looking at her with this creepy, embarrassed smile.  I wouldn’t say that her expression said “Please don’t say anything” but it affirmed, “yes.  I know you know who I am.”

This has really been bothering me a lot lately.  I think about it every time I see a poster with his face on it, every time I hear the name George Michael, and every time I see orange tic-tacs.

Apparently there’s a crisis in stock market, David Foster Wallace killed himself over the weekend, and Sarah Palin is still showing up on every website I read.  It’s Monday, I’m probably enjoying the lull before the storm of obnoxious people at the library, and I don’t understand any of it.

If I really worked for a blog, I’d have the pleasure of being the first to blog news.  But, my wordpress blog doesn’t pay me, I have less time to pay attention to things happening because of school, and I don’t have cable.  Fancy that.  Moving on, there were a few things I wanted to talk about that happened in the last day or two/over the weekend.

venus in transit

My nephew got to come home for one night before he was taken back to the hospital for jaundice.  He’s been there since Thursday night I think.  Hopefully he comes home tonight.

I haven’t had too much time to focus on current events since my mom has been visiting, school has started, and the baby was born, but I’ve had a little more time to spend alone to focus on writing.

I have to be honest that up until a couple months ago, all I knew about Ben Stein’s resume was Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Clear Eyes commercials, and Win Ben Stein’s Money. So I was sort of surprised, but mostly impressed that he had been a speech writer for Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, a presidential adviser, and a lawyer.

For now I’ll just say that I have a new nephew.  His name is Felix and he was born this afternoon.  My sister and her husband are welcoming their new eating and shitting machine at Beth Israel right now.
